I was pleased to contribute to the Fall 2017 issue of Art Papers Magazine. This was the “sound” issue, so each article maintained some focus on the culture of sound, music, or the aural experience. My essay, “Signature Sounds, Cultural Architecture”, delves into the evolution of creative agency in hip-hop via the notion of audio tags and liner notes, touching on how the Digital Age has shaped the dependence on materiality in the industry, and thus influenced how artists claim credit for their work. I’ve been really thrilled with the feedback on my essay, and I’m glad to have added my voice to this issue.
In addition to my contribution, there are some really great pieces from writers all over the world. Art Papers publishes quarterly, and is available wherever you purchase fine art magazines. Definitely grab a copy of this issue!
